What To Expect

The Carolina Center for Behavioral Health is committed to providing comprehensive care in a secure, confidential, and comfortable environment. We want our patients to be informed and engaged participants in their treatment experience. Read below for information on what to expect during treatment.

Special Instructions for Patients and Families

  • Patients and family members are informed of approved personal belongings prior to the assessment (see overview below).
  • Cigarettes (21 and older only), schoolbooks, and small amounts of money can be dropped off at the front desk for the patient.
  • Home medications are checked by the admitting nurse.
  • Controlled medications and substances are sent home or secured in the hospital safe.
  • Special creams, ointments, and inhalers are labeled and stored on the medication cart if approved by the treating physician.
  • Calling a patient requires a patient ID number provided to the patient during admission. The patient determines to whom he or she gives this ID number.

Approved Items

  • Three changes of clothing (washers and dryers are available)
  • Basic toiletries and grooming aids
  • Glasses, contacts, contact solutions, hearing aids, and batteries
  • Slip-on shoes and socks
  • One set of warm outerwear
  • Appropriate sleepwear and undergarments
  • Curling irons
  • Lip balm
  • Flowers with the patient name and ID number in a plastic vase
  • Unopened tobacco products

NOT Approved Items

  • Alcohol or alcohol-based products
  • Outside food and drinks
  • Controlled medications
  • Personal electronic devices
  • Cell phones
  • Belts, shoelaces, clothing with drawstrings
  • Clothing with hoods (jackets, hoodies, sweaters, shirts)
  • Hats and sunglasses
  • Clothing with inappropriate logos or designs
  • Boots of any kind
  • Sharp objects including picture frames, knives, nail clippers, tweezers, sewing needles, wire or metal bound notebooks, and glass vases
  • Para cord items
  • Jewelry with sharp ends (metal or plastic)
  • Disposable razors
  • Nail polish and remover
  • Vapes, lighters, matches, and lighter fluid
  • Musical instruments*
  • Toys, games, stuffed animals (only allowed on the adolescent unit)*
  • Money over $20
  • Credit cards and checkbooks
  • Pillows and bed linens
  • Hangers
  • Metal cases, containers, or objects
  • Hair dryers (each unit will provide a hair dryer)

*Only allowed if permitted by the treating physician.
